YOUR SAFETY
Professional advice for South African motorists β know what to do before help arrives.
1. What To Do If Your Vehicle Breaks Down
Pull Over Safely
Activate your hazard lights, check your mirrors, and move as far off the road as possible β into the emergency lane or yellow line if safe. Never stop in a blind curve, on a hill, or in the middle of traffic.
Make Yourself Visible
Turn on your interior dome light at night and place your red reflective warning triangle at least 45β100 metres behind your vehicle β further on highways.
Stay Inside Your Locked Car
In South Africa, this is often the safest option. Keep doors locked and windows only slightly cracked for fresh air. Do not get out unless you feel immediate danger from traffic.
Call For Help Right Away
Contact C's Towing on our 24/7 emergency line +27 72 819 2671. Provide your exact location (use Google Maps pin if possible), number of passengers, and a brief description of the problem.
Pro Tip: If you have a dashcam or tracker with roadside assistance, activate it. Run the engine for short periods (10β15 minutes) only if it's safe and you need heat or air-con β always crack a window.
2. What To Do If You're Involved In An Accident
Stop safely and switch on hazard lights immediately.
Check for injuries β do not move anyone unless there is immediate danger such as fire or oncoming traffic.
Call emergency services: 112 from any cellphone, 10111 for Police, 10177 for Ambulance.
Stay at the scene β it is illegal to leave until police have attended or you have reported it within 24 hours if minor.
Document everything β photograph all vehicles, damage, road conditions, number plates, and the scene before moving anything. Exchange details with the other driver. Do not admit fault.
Call C's Towing on +27 72 819 2671 if your vehicle needs to be moved or towed.
3. Staying Safe While Waiting For Assistance
Roadside crime including smash-and-grabs and carjackings is a real risk in South Africa, especially after dark. Here's how to protect yourself:
Remain in your locked vehicle with windows up at all times.
Be vigilant β watch for suspicious vehicles or people approaching on foot.
Do not open your door or accept help from strangers.
Keep a charged phone, pepper spray (legal), and a torch in your car at all times.
If threatened, sound your hooter continuously and call 10111 immediately.
Turn on your interior light at night so our CS Towing team can identify you clearly.
4. High-Risk Areas In Gauteng
Gauteng accounts for over 50% of national carjacking cases. Be especially alert in these areas:
ποΈ Johannesburg & Surrounds
Ivory Park, Alexandra, Tembisa, Jeppe, Johannesburg Central
ποΈ Pretoria / Tshwane
Mamelodi East, Akasia, Pretoria West
π£οΈ Major Highways
N1 (Midrand to Allandale), N3, N12, N17 β exercise extra caution especially after dark
Remember: Awareness is your best defence anywhere in South Africa. Drive with extra caution on highways, avoid stopping in isolated areas, and always call a professional towing service rather than accepting unsolicited help.
